
Going from Riga, on the 72nd km of Vidzeme highway between Sigulda and Cēsis, nature has created and people have improved a wonderful place of recreation, where those, tired of daily rush, can regain their vigour watching the picturesque waterfalls of Meldrupe, always changing and peculiar exposition of floristry, obtain energy from the noble pace of the impressive waterwheel.
Ieriķu mill is more than 300 years old, for it first appears in the manor map in 1681. At those times it was built as an integral part of the household of Ieriķu manor. The small river, on which the mill is situated, is called Melderupe, Grūbupe or Ieriķupe.
Sadly, after the fire in 1987, only the masonry is left over from the mill, but still it is very impressive and Ieriķu watermill is included the list of local architectural monuments (heritage) as a monument of the building of the 17th century.
With a fresh and great power the renewed waterwheel has resumed its pace. It is named after the former owner Ziemelis – Jorģis.
The little river Meldrupe can be proud of its scenic steep banks and seven waterfalls of different height, that are sometimes called also Grūba waterfalls. One of them is includes in the list of the most beautiful waterfalls of Latvia and it is worth seeing it in any season. Meldrupe is a typical salmon river. Every year at the end of October and in November you are welcome here to watch salmons coming to the river to spawn, and how they are trying to overcome the height of the biggest waterfall.
The most dexterous have an opportunity to experience extraordinary feelings in the sideshow above the river, overpowering the 400m long air rope route.
You can have a rich meal at the inn “Pie Dzirnakmeņa” (at the millstone) located in this nice recreation park.
